About NgorongoroSafari.com

An independent guide to one of Africa’s great wildlife places, written for people planning their first — or next — Tanzania safari.

NgorongoroSafari.com exists because planning a crater safari is confusing: fees per person and per vehicle, a six-hour rule, rim lodges at ten times the price of a room in Karatu, and tours that range from about €100 to several thousand. It is an independent travel guide to the Ngorongoro Crater, the wider conservation area and the northern circuit around it — written to be genuinely useful before you go and while you are there.

What we cover

  • How to get to the crater from Kilimanjaro Airport and Arusha, with realistic journey times.
  • Which tours and safaris are worth booking, ranked honestly and updated as ratings change.
  • What to see beyond the crater floor — Olduvai, Empakaai, Ndutu, Lake Manyara, Tarangire and the Serengeti.
  • Where to sleep, from Karatu farm lodges to the crater rim.
  • When to come, and what each month is like on the ground.

How we research

Fees, journey times and seasonal patterns are checked against the conservation authority, operators and booking platforms, and reviewed regularly. Tour ratings and review counts come directly from GetYourGuide. Where a figure moves — conservation fees, exchange rates, lodge prices — we give an approximate amount and say so, rather than pretend to a precision that does not exist.

Where we express an opinion, it is an opinion. We tell you when a day trip is mostly driving, when a new listing has no reviews yet and when the cheaper option is the better one.

How the site is funded

We are a GetYourGuide affiliate partner and a Trip.com partner. If you book a tour or a room through a link on this site, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That is the only way this guide is funded — there is no advertising, no sponsored placements and no paid inclusion in any ranking. Read the full affiliate disclosure.

Corrections

Fees change, lodges change hands, rules are revised. If something here is out of date or wrong, please tell us — we would rather fix it than defend it. Write to us via the contact page.

Plan your safari

Make the Ngorongoro Crater the heart of your Tanzania safari

Drop 600 metres to the crater floor at dawn, look for black rhino and lions among the zebra, and picnic by the hippo pool. Compare day trips from Arusha, two-day Tarangire combinations and full Serengeti safaris — and book in a couple of taps.
