Why Ngorongoro?

Around 25,000 animals on the floor of a collapsed volcano

The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact volcanic caldera on earth that has not filled with water: a bowl about 19 km wide whose 600-metre walls shelter lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, flamingos and some of Tanzania’s last black rhinos. Because the animals live here all year, a morning on the crater floor is among the most reliable game drives in Africa.

You can see it on a long day trip from Arusha, on a two-day safari with Tarangire, or as part of a full northern-circuit journey to the Serengeti. This guide helps you choose honestly — with the fees explained, the trade-off between a rim lodge and Karatu, the best time of day and year, and the practical details from visas to how cold it gets at 2,300 metres.

Arusha: Serengeti and Ngorongoro Multi-Day Camping Safari

A budget camping safari from Arusha that covers the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, with tents, a cook and a driver-guide. A flexible northern-circuit loop that can run from two to four days: Tarangire first, then the Serengeti, then the Ngorongoro Crater on the way back to Arusha. The four-day version gives the Serengeti the time it needs and is a sensible minimum for a first safari.

  • Flexible length from two to four days
  • Well reviewed for its price
A large baobab tree in Tarangire National Park Day trip from €281
🕒 13 hours 📍 From Arusha ⭐ 4.7 (14)

Arusha: Tarangire National Park Day Safari

A day safari to Tarangire, the closest of the big northern parks to Arusha. In the dry season elephants gather along the Tarangire River in large numbers, and the baobab-dotted landscape looks nothing like the crater. A good first or last day around a Ngorongoro trip.

  • Elephant herds along the Tarangire River
  • Giant baobabs
  • Roughly two to two and a half hours from Arusha
A traditional Maasai boma in the Ngorongoro highlands Cultural tour from €98
🕒 6–8.5 hours 📍 From Arusha ⭐ 4.9 (35)

Arusha: Maasai Village Tour

A full-day cultural visit to a Maasai community outside Arusha, with time to learn how a boma is organised, how livestock shape daily life and how traditions are changing. It is a slower and usually more personal alternative to the brief roadside boma stops on the way to the crater.

  • A day with a Maasai community
  • Learn about herding, homes and customs
  • Highly rated by travellers

Where to go

The crater and the wild country around it

The crater is the headline, but Olduvai, Ndutu, Lake Manyara, Tarangire and the Serengeti turn a morning game drive into a complete Tanzania safari.

Ngorongoro Crater

The Big Five on one crater floor

The world’s largest intact, unflooded volcanic caldera: a bowl roughly 19 km across with walls about 600 m high and around 25,000 large animals living on its floor. Lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, flamingos and a small, closely guarded population of black rhino share about 260 square kilometres of grassland, swamp, forest and soda lake.

The eroded layers and rock monolith of Olduvai Gorge Inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Olduvai Gorge

Oldupai, Laetoli and the shifting sands

A dry ravine cut into the plains between the crater and the Serengeti, and one of the most important sites in the study of human origins. The Leakey family’s finds here, the 3.6-million-year-old footprints at nearby Laetoli and a small, well-made museum make it the classic stop on the drive west.

Ndutu

Where the wildebeest are born

The woodland and short-grass plains around Lakes Ndutu and Masek, where the conservation area meets the Serengeti. From roughly December to March the Great Migration gathers here to calve, and the predators follow. Outside those months it is quiet.

Zebras and wildebeest grazing by Lake Manyara Karatu & the Rift Valley lakes

Lake Manyara National Park

Forest, flamingos and the Rift wall

A compact park squeezed between the Rift Valley escarpment and a shallow soda lake, on the road from Arusha to Ngorongoro. Groundwater forest, big baboon troops, elephants, hippos and rich birdlife make it an easy half-day or full-day game drive.

Tarangire National Park

Elephants and baobabs

In the dry season the Tarangire River is one of the few reliable water sources for a huge area, and elephants arrive in herds of dozens or even hundreds. Add ancient baobabs and far fewer vehicles than the Serengeti, and you have the northern circuit’s most underrated park.

Serengeti National Park

The endless plains next door

Ngorongoro’s vast neighbour, reached by the road that passes the crater rim. The Serengeti is the stage for the Great Migration and has big cats all year round. Almost every safari longer than two days combines it with the crater.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Ngorongoro Crater?

In northern Tanzania, about 180 km west of Arusha, inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area between Lake Manyara and the Serengeti. See how to get there.

Can you visit the Ngorongoro Crater on a day trip?

Yes. From Arusha it is a long day — three to four hours’ drive each way — but several operators run it daily. An overnight in Karatu makes it far more relaxed. Compare the day trips.

How much does it cost to enter the Ngorongoro Crater?

At the time of writing, non-resident adults pay roughly US$70 per person per 24 hours to enter the conservation area, plus a crater service fee of around US$295 per vehicle per descent. Most tours include these in the price. See fees explained.

What animals will I see?

Lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, zebra, wildebeest, hyenas, jackals and gazelles on almost every visit, flamingos in season, and with luck a black rhino. There are no giraffes on the crater floor.

When is the best time to visit?

The crater is good all year because its animals do not migrate. June to October is driest and busiest; November to May is greener and quieter. See the best time to visit.

How many days do I need?

Half a day is enough for the crater itself. Most travellers combine it with Tarangire or Lake Manyara in two to three days, or add the Serengeti for five to seven.
